Insured car warranties, where one company sells the warranty, and a separate insurer underwrites or administers the claims. The insurer will be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the warranty seller will be one of their appointed representatives. If the insurer is a member of the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and goes bust you may be eligible for 90% compensation from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Direct car warranties, where the scheme is operated at the discretion of the scheme administrator for the mutual benefit of all its members. Discretionary warranties can vary terms to help members more than insurance-based schemes. These schemes are monitored by The Motor Ombudsman (TMO), so have to adhere to their code of practice, including minimum standards set by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI). The Motor Ombudsman deals with complaints and provides dispute resolution service.
